Ancient Mariner 2018

By Skipper Jim West

Our thanks to Max Rosenberg and all of the Ancient Mariner staff for an amazing 2018 regatta. Strong competition and good sportsmanship were seen throughout the weekend. Congrats to the other crews on their achievements.

The Tiki Too girls had a number of great successes. They won the Great Republic trophy, a demanding award, last achieved by any crew in 2013. It requires the crew to be Clipper Class and to qualify in every team event. They also won 9 First Place awards, the Kent Dryden Drill-Off Final, the Navigator Award, Fleet Drill (won by Bella, our drill coxswain) and the Sportsmanship Trophy (in memory of Northland’s Ashton Dotson).

The vivid memories of Kent and Ashton and Chris Stevens (whose name was engraved on the Sportsmanship Trophy in 2004) along with the astounding achievements, that conclude a season of hard work and challenges, made for an especially emotional ceremony.

The First Place awards were for: Compass, Knots, Team Knots, Mariner Quiz, Semaphore (100%), Pullboat Flotilla, Marlinspike and Radio.

Six Second Place awards were for: Breeches Buoy, Rules of the Road, Scuttlebutt, Sailing, Bosun’s Chair and Uniform Inspection.

Tiki’s four seniors, five middle girls and five new girls have worked hard and should be very proud. Thanks also to our training officers and parents for giving the girls the opportunity to succeed.
