Safety at Sea Training (YBI) 2023

By Skipper Kelly Lindblom, SSS Shasta Kraken

On Saturday, September 23, 2003, the SSS Tiki Too and the SSS Shasta Kraken attended the annual Safety at Sea training hosted by SSS Chaser and the U.S. Coast Guard at Yerba Buena Island in the beautiful San Francisco Bay. We lovingly refer to this event as simply “YBI”. Our crew started the weekend with an overnighter on MP90 Liberty and Cal Bay IV at their home port on Bethel Island, CA. Believe it or not, none of our girls had every attended YBI before. On Saturday morning, we woke up early downed some muffins and pop-tarts, then drove to the event. Throughout the day, the girls practices using fire hoses and fire extinguishers, flares, damage control gear, survival suits including a chilling plunge into the Bay, and learned about towing and maritime safety in the classroom. We were served a delicious BBQ hamburger lunch. The weather was beautiful this year and the girls reported having a great time.

On Sunday morning, the Shasta Kraken girls got underway for a little bit of training on board Cal Bay IV. Thanks to Skipper West and Miss Lina for the fun morning!
